DURANT, Okla. -- The two Democratic candidates for Bryan County Sheriff had their chance to speak at the Bryan County Federation of Democratic Women on Tuesday.

Incumbent Bill Sturch and challenger Roy Brown both explained why they feel they are best for the job.

Sturch served in the Unites States Navy, and was an investigator before becoming sheriff 15 years ago. He says he has experience working with a tight budget.

Brown was an Oklahoma State Trooper, served as Durant police chief for a few years, and more recently trained officers in Iraq.

"The public needs to be informed of what it is that the candidates stand for and to make a decision on how to vote," Charline Eblen ,with the Bryan County Democratic Women, said.

The Democratic Primary is slated for July.

I the reason there havent been any escapes in the recent months is the jail is on lockdown and has been since at least april. And lockdown means that 2 prisoners get out of there cells at a time for 1 hour then go back in. it would be really hard for all the jailers to lose 2 people. so dont go thinkin that just cause there haven't been any escapes that Sturch is doin a better job. All He is doin is keepin them confined in the cells instead of beefin up security so they cant escape. There are other ways to keep them in the jail than keepin them in their cells 23 hours a day. so its time to get someone in office that will actually do a job and not take the easy way out so they can look good.

Is this the same Roy Brown that could not work with his fellow employees, and was dismissed from Chief of Police in Durant? Why would anyone want to vote for him if his fellow employees found him to be incompetent, then what makes anyone think he could be a good candidate for Sheriff,Just because he will pay for your meal does not mean he would make a good Sheriff it just means he is tring to buy his way to a vote,And on top of it make you promises he knows he would not be able to do.Heck wake up people he is only telling you what he knows you want to hear. And truth be known he has the support of the people that were behind the jail trust authority, the ones that allowed all the BS to go on until Sturch was given it back, So would you be able to sleep safe at night knowing this? Just think about it and do so while you are casting your votes.

What no one is saying, that I feel should come out is the fact the same people who were behind the jail trust authority, which was responsible for the jail during the time of most of the escapes, are the very same people backing Roy Brown, now how much better and safer are you gonna feel. All Roy could talk about is more traffic, more planning, more man power, what lottery is he guarantted if he is going to be able to hire more people on the same budget? Or is someone setting on money that may be made available to their person?

in july 07 i reported to monty montgomery what was going on at the jail.inmates were being let out of thier cells after midnight.some were placed in the control area to monitor oncoming vehicle traffic and notified all inmates of any activity. i made reference to cetain writings on the wall in the female area so there would be proof of what i saw. there is phone records to substantiate this. shortly thereafter i approached sheriff sturch in the parking lot and relayed to him the same information.i spoke with chief of police rudick.if all the police officers and deputies knew of the curruption in their upper management i think they would like charges brought against these men or at the very least have them resign.the people you guys brought in were let out to have a good time.i plan in the next few months to notify the osbi of the wrong doings.i will say to the deputies teach yourself to be more personable and learn the law do not watch cops!the laws in okla differ in each state

It is clearly time for a change. Brown clearly has much more experience in law enforcement and I know he will improve the poor response time to calls. It goes without saying that the jail will be improved. We need a new sheriff who really cares about the county (not just around election time)and has the experience to get the job done!! Please vote for Brown.

Live in south Bryan Co. where there's no law. It's open season here. Drugs, drunk drivers, Carpenters Bluff Bridge is out of control! The only time the law comes down here is the eat at The Dock on weekends. We could use someone that cares. But since it's poor here, we're on the back burner. But we do vote!

to me: If you want to get the facts straight-there hasn't been any escapes since sturch took over the jail. the last escape was in jul 07, under the jail trust authority and sturch took the jail back in Oct 07

brown couldn't even keep a job as chief of police what mkes you think the can do the sheriffs job. our sheriff has done a very good job and he gets my vote. and since he has took the jail back there hasn't been but one escape so get your facts straight. brown you couldn't do your job then what makes you think you can do it now.

If the current Sheriff, was doing a good job....their really would be an election...he's been too long in the saddle

RONNIE-PULL YOUR HEAD OUT PLEASE...THE JAIL TRUST AUTHORITY WAS IN CHARGE OF THE JAIL WHEN ALL THE ESCAPES HAPPENED. YOU CAN THANK DWAYNE SIMPSON FOR THE JAIL PROBLEMS...HE WAS THE ONE WHO SPENT THE MONEY TO HAVE TWO JAILS IN BRYAN COUNTY WHEN THEY COULD HAVE HAD A 180 BED FACILITY FOR WHAT HE SPENT.

Posted by: RONNIE Location: DURANT on May 20, 2008 at 08:59 PM
IT SHOULD BE A NO BRAINER,WE NEED CHANGE IN BRYAN COUNTY.MAYBE WITH BROWN AS SHERIFF THE JAIL WILL GET BETTER.IT COULDN'T GET ANY WORSE.EVERYONE LAUGHS AT THE SHERIFFS OFFICE BECAUSE OF THE PAST ESCAPES.
