DURANT, Okla. -- To honor this week's A+ Athlete, Daniel Gotera headed over to Durant High School to meet Ty Ketchum.

This week’s A+ Athlete is Ty Ketchum from Durant High School. Ty is an academic standout, maintaining a 4.0 G.P.A., which ranks him #1 in his class, and being successful in his studies comes from his achievements on the field.

On the field, Ty is a two-year starting cornerback for the Durant Lions football team. He says he wouldn't know what to do if he weren't playing every Friday night.

In addition to the work on the gridiron, Ty is also on the basketball team and on the track team, and that dedication has not gone unnoticed by his head coach, Byron Cordell.

Away from the field, Ty mentors at risk youths in the city and has spent time collecting items to send overseas for U.S. Troops.

After graduating, he plans to attend Oklahoma State University and study engineering, a passion he has always had.

Congratulations to Ty Ketchum on being named this week's A+ Athlete.

We'll introduce you to another A+ Athlete every Friday here on First News AM. School officials, coaches, teachers, and counselors are encouraged to send in your nominees.
