Not to worry, Mavs are fine

Despite everything you've heard about the Dallas Mavericks recently, they are right where they want to be.

Remember back to roughly 11 months ago when the Mavs were abruptly ushered out of the 1st round of the playoffs.  The thought was that Avery Johnson had pushed his team too hard during the regular season.  The thought was that his team was rusty after resting the starters for nearly the last 2 weeks of the season.

Throughout this season, the Mavs have tried to go about things exactly opposite of last season.  Avery even saying 6 weeks ago that the reason his team wasn't playing championship basketball was because it wasn't time yet.  There was little importance placed on the regular season from Game 1 this time around.  The only goal was to make the playoffs, and they wanted to be forced to compete right up to the end of the season so that there would be no thought given to resting the starters.

Mission accomplished.

Eventhough the Mavs are 0-7 against teams over .500 since the Jason Kidd trade, they are right where they want to be.  It's not like they've been blown out in those 7 games.  In fact their average margin of loss was just 6.4 points.  They were in every one of those games, things just didn't fall their way.

The Mavs are getting everything they wanted: They will make the playoffs, they haven't been pushed hard this year and won't be worn out, they are having to fight all the way to the finish of the regular season, and they are still playing at the same level as the rest of the West.

They'll beat these teams in the playoffs, and they'll be back in the Western Confrence Finals.

Don't believe the hype, everything is going just like the Mavs wanted.  The feeling is 180 degrees different than it was this time last and the means the result will follow suit.

Never way to shy away from admitting i was wrong...I was wrong, infact I was very, very wrong. The Kidd trade did NOT work out. I'm not sure if it is chemistry, coaching style or waht, but it definitely did not work out. Dirk getting hurt just makes matters worse. The Mavericks are definitely not "fine" now. Anybody remember how that lotto thing works?....

Posted by: Anonymous dont be so negative, theyre not done. I think all they have to do is beat out the nuggets for the 8th spot and get dirk back and get on a win streak which likely possible. If they went to school in oklahoma they would no better than to count them out!

Wow... this blog reminds me of that Iraqi press secretary who kept insisting Iraq was crushing the American army back when the war started. The Mavericks are done. In fact, they are a lottery team now. Thank you Mr. Cuban for the Kidd trade. Jerry Stackhouse and Devean George did their best to derail it. But alas... could not. And now we are circa 1996.

Still fine without Dirk for 2 weeks? They're done. They might get the 8 seed and play the Lakers in round 1. Good luck.

I'm not so sure I will go as far as we are "fine" but I refuse to be all doom and gloom. I am hoping that maybe we will turn out to be one of those teams that are built for the playoffs. There is no denying - we have talent. I think we will continue to "gel" and play better ball. W will make it past the first round this year, unless we get matched up with the Lakers, which unfortunately is entirely possible. Dubya - The Kidd trade didn't ruin it all. You people who think Harris was the second coming of John Stockton need to pull your head out. HE WAS NOT THAT GOOD. I don't think we have the perfect team, but at least we have an owner who is willing to stick his neck out and mix it up a little bit. The mavs needed a jolt. I don't always agree with MVP, but our near record breaking regular season last year sure didn't help us out when April rolled around. Just a side note - go to ask.com and type in "Who is the best point guard in the nba?" and see whose name pops up...

The Mavs are fine? The Mavs are fine? Have you been hiding under a rock or did you go to school in Oklahoma? The Mavs are consistently losing to the top teams in the NBA after the KIDD trade! It was a gigantic mistake! The Mavs had a solid team and were on the brink of a successful playoff run & championship. The Kidd trade ruined it all.

What a dumb article... the Mavs are done.
