A new name for the Sonics

In light of recent events, it appears that the Seattle Sonics basketball team will soon call Oklahoma City home. Also, team chairman Clay Bennett said this week that he plans to drop the "Sonics" name and colors after the move is made so that if Seattle gets another team in the future, they have to option to use that same name and color scheme.

That having been said, when the team does move to OKC, they'll need a new nickname. You've already heard David Reed's suggestion of "Sooner Sonics," but since we now know that they'll be dropping the "Sonics" name that won't work. Here are some other names that we came up with:

I think Boomers would be an appropriate name for the new OKC basketball team. This name would relate to Oklahoma history.

Just wanted to comment on Mark Van Paasschen's suggestions...you don't name a team based in the heart of tornado alley the Tornadoes, do I have to explain...NOR the Boomers, that of the city home of the largest domestic terrerist attack (YES, caused by a BOMB) Jesus, use your noggin! Yeah let's rename the Knicks to the Collapsers! OR how's about them there Dallas Assasinators! WOOHOO!

"Thunderbirds" OK is the home of the 45th Div. "Thunderbirds", Tinker AFB Air Forces has the "Thunderbirds" and Native American Indians use the "Thunderbird" as a sign of good luck. So why not the Oklahoma City Thunderbirds.

The name should represent what Oklahoma means..."Land of The Red Man". Our State Capital Building has an exquisite sculpture of The Guardian on top of the dome. The team should be named the Oklahoma Guardians.

I have a hard time thinking of a name for something owned by a two faced liar (i.e. Clay Bennett) How about the team formally known as the Sonics or how about the Oklahoma City Rats!! There slogan could even be "If you cry enough and make friends with the right people (David Stern). You can by your way out of anything!" By the way since you traded any decent player you had last year good luck putting a competitive team on the court next year!

I agree with a previous poster- since the local baseball team dropped the 89ers nickname, give it to the TFKATS (Team Formerly Known As The SuperSonics). Besides, there are a boatload of Sonic drive-ins in Oklahoma, and unless the team gets called the Carhops, I see no reason to tie the two together.

I love so many of the names...but remember what happens with them when things are goning bad.. they become derogitory names. I like Oklahoma Shooters Or Okie Shooters. The Oklahoman's, or Okie Twisters Or just the Okies. I think it's important to stay away from OU or OSU, and make this a statewide club...unique!
