Mavs in 7, Maybe 6

4-18-07

I think the Mavericks got the best possible first round matchup.  Of the four teams at the top of the conference, they would not want to start with San Antonio or Utah.  They certainly had no desire to take on the Lakers off the top.  New Orleans is a team with very little playoff experience.  Players on the Hornets that do have post-season experience, did not get it while playing for the Hornets.  I think the Mavs put it together and win this series in 7, maybe 6.

Ooops. It took the Hornets only five games. More and more the NBA is becoming a young(er) mans game. Kidd hasn't helped the Mavs, much like Shaq hasn't helped the Suns. Check out all of the underclassmen coming out in the draft. Cuban erred in trading talented youth for a too long in the tooth point guard. He's got quite a problem on his hands. It's likely a coaching change is forthcoming, but it will require more than that. Cuban's got to do something to re-stock this team with some youthful talent. It is unfortunate Dirk will not get a ring. Well, at least not here in Dallas. I'd hate to see him go, but I don't think Stack, Kidd, George, or Dampier will receive much interest from teams with higher picks in the draft.

I agree with ya sportsgal. Josh Howard really made me mad with his comments on the Michael Irvin show. He is pretty much a loser. I love sports but unfortunately parents need to communicate with young kids to like & admire them for their hard work & athletic ability. Most of these athletes, musicians, actors/actresses are not role models for most of these kids. Like Josh Howard as a basketball player, not as a role model to follow. Like Britney Spears for her music, not as a role model for young girls. Like Lindsey Lohan & Heath Ledger for their movies, not as role models for young children. Parents & respectable professionals in the community should be role models for the kids. Remember what Charles Barkley said years ago?

To Ralph - I am not naive enough to think that there are no drugs in the NBA, but getting on the radio and all but endorsing legalizing it is another story. J-Ho went on about how his mama raised him to be honest. If I was his mama I'd slap him for being stupid. I can't control (nor do I wish to) what he does in the off season, but pro athletes need to realize that they are idols and role models for a bunch of kids. I work with underpriviledged kids everyday - trust me they have plenty of adults at home lightin up, they dont need him admitting he does it too. If he insists on smoking, I'd rather him lie about it than be so self righteous in his "truth" As far as the comment he was lighting up at half time - it was a joke, laugh a little. He deserves any of the crap thrown his way over this.

Saddest statistic of the night. Brad Richards had four points on Sunday, Jason Kidd had three. Richards had three assists, Kidd had three. Problem is Richards is a hockey player for the Dallas Stars. That is pathetic on so many levels. Great trade Cuban... really made your team a contender. As for Josh Howard, if you are going to spout comments like that, you better bring your A-game. He was the worst player on the court in game 4. And this team is done. Not just for this year, but as a collective group, this team's better days are long behind them.

Oh please. The mavs performance in G1 & 2 had nothing to do with Howards off-season recreation choices. He's the same player today as he was last month (before he opened his mouth). I am not appalled to learn that he smokes pot in the off season. Drug usage is not new to the NBA. By the way, re: camp...if the purpose is to send your kid somewhere where he (or she) can get autographs or worship their favorite players, then a Mavs camp may be the place to go. On the other hand, if you want your kid to learn to play better basketball, a celebrity pro camp is not the place to send them.

Now we know why the Mavs look like amateurs the first two game. J-Ho was lightin up a fat one at half time! Is anyone else as apalled as I was after hearing his interview with Michael Irvin? If you are going to be stupid enough to light one up, let's not tell the world about it! I know we are thinking long and hard before letting my child go to Mav's Hoop Camp this year. At least Pac Man will hame someone to party with.

Yea, the Mavs will take it in six alright. They'll take it like they got it in the first two games. The Hornets will give it to them in six (or less), and by "it", I don't mean the series. This playoff experience concept is way over used. All of these guys have been involved in many must win situations during their athletic careers, and considering the turnover in personnel which is common these days, past playoff appearances mean nothing. This is just media-speak. It comes down to talent, teamwork, and a game plan. The Mavs do fairly well in the regular season when W-L records are meaningless except to determine playoff seeding. Could someone on this team just catch and shoot with a quick release, instead of looking for the open man who is either further from the basket or out of position to score? And Avery, who in their right mind would try to double Paul with Kidd and Dirk? Neither one can play perimeter defense, and Kidd needs to learn he cannot lunge at someone who can penetrate.

sadly once the mavs get eliminated, it's the end of an era. hopefully it won't be like 1990 when the mavs went 10 years without winning basketball. but it'll be a while. the mavs traded the future for what? making the team worse. and now they're gonna have to find a new coach because avery can't stay. he had all this talent and did what? lose an nba final (thanks in no small part to the refs) and win 67 games BUT lose in the 1st round twice in a row? he's gone. as much as i love dirk, mavs gotta completely rebuild and ship him off for draft picks. keep bass and antoine wright and dump the rest for whatever you can get.

Dave- after the last 2 games (especially after the 24-point beatdown in Game 2), are you sure Dallas will win this series? Or did you mean the Stars? I know, hindsight is 20-20, but it ain't looking good for the Big German and his crew.

CP3 deserves all the hype. That kid is good, and will get even better. However, you can't put a price tag on playoff experience, and we've got it they don't. The mavs have been there. They want it bad, and I think they'll take it - in 6.

David, I can't believe you... do you not remember what happened last year? As much as I want the Mavericks to win, let's not forget their debauchle against the #8 seed last year. Now they're facing Chris Paul, a guy you've believed in for a while. As much as I would LOVE to see the Mavericks win, I say Hornets in 7.
