NASCAR needs to change

The NASCAR brass has a lot to be proud of.  After all, theirs is the fastest growing spectator sport.  They've seemingly made all the right moves to grow their sport into the nationwide phenomenon that it is today.

However, there is one glaring problem that NASCAR needs to address ASAP or risk taking some backward steps.

Recently Tony Stewart said that he and his team, Joe Gibbs Racing, may be considering parting ways at the end of this season.  Stewart said that he has already begun searching teams that he is considering joining, one of those being Haas/CNC.  They control the car numbers of 66 and 70, one of which would become Stewart's new number if he does, in fact, make this move.

As we found out when Dale Earnhardt Jr. left D.E.I. to join Hendrick Motorsports, if a driver changes teams, he doesn't necessarily get to take his car number with him.  NASCAR needs to realize that their fans aren't fans of a team.  They are fans of the driver.  And, that means his number, his sponsor, his colors, etc.  NASCAR is in danger of alienating some of it's fan base if they don't make allowances for drivers to keep their numbers if they decide to change teams.

NASCAR has made all the right decisions so far, hopefully they can get this one right too, and soon.

Football PLEASE HURRY! Those of us with a college degree cant stand the talk of card driving in circles wasting natural resources so people have an excuse to pull their trailer somewhere, get drunk and scream their heads off at a race track whrere you can't hear anything any way! Seriously is there a more pointless sport than this one? Anyone know if there is some rugby or cricket action we can discuss? Anything is better than this!

While I agree with what you're saying, Mark, I don't think it's going to be a problem down the road because Mr. France will have our beloved sport so messed up it will be non-existant. Have you looked in the grandstands lately or looked at the TV ratings??? With gas prices the way they are, not to mention the price of a race ticket in the larger areas, we won't have a sport to watch. It's sad but true and we have to face reality folks.

Wow... so it has come to this, huh? Thanks a lot Mavs and Rangers... we have resorted to talking about NASCAR in May. I have a few things NASCAR can do to change. How about not race...... at all..... ever...... again. I think it would be great.

Numbers, shmumbers. What's the big deal? They also refer to these custom made crates as Chevys, Fords, Toyotas etc. These are kit cars with manufacturers emblems stuck to the front end. Stock Car racing? If a driver doesn't mind going from Fake Ford to Fake Chevy, why should it matter if he drives a different number? Just race. Have you noticed that as NASCAR has grown in popularity, it has become more like the Oprah Show and the View with all its drama, bellyaching, and hurt feelings? Buggity Buggity.

I couldn't agree with you more. Being a Jr. fan it killed me last year.

nascar is awful. racing? driving in circles? and the message they send? it's okay to cheat. if you get caught, you get a little punishment, a slap on the wrist really. who cares about numbers. all i know is that i'm tired of seeing the number 3 everywhere.

Even tho the "Jr. Nation" made a lot of noise last year about losing the #8, I haven't heard a lot of flak directed toward the black #8 car. They've seemed to adapted to the #88 just fine. Pettys 43, Dales #3 should always remain with those men because that was their numbers when they were done racing. If you move to another team, you should expect to go with their numbers. They are after all TEAM NUMBERS. The owner picks and buys them, not the drivers.
