Who wins the Axe?

It's bigger and better than ever. The Denison Yellow Jackets (9-0) take on the Sherman Bearcats (8-1) for the district championship on Friday. Both teams are undefeated in district play, meaning this is for all the marbles. But really, it means nothing in the playoff picture. Both teams will go their separate ways in division one and division two of class 4A, both as the top seed from the district.

So this game means nothing right? Think again. These two teams have a love-hate relationship. They love to beat each other, and they hate to lose. Denison carries the coveted axe into the game after erasing a 19 point deficit in the 4th quarter a year ago. This should certainly be another barn-burner. So who wins the battle of the axe? I'm holding my prediction until game night in our 6pm sportscast. But for you, the web-channel surfer, go right ahead and post your thoughts on the big game.

What's to debate. If you have eyes to see, it's not a debate. DJ is far and away a better ball player than James. Don't get me wrong, James is a heck of a ball player...but being "better than average" doesn't put him in DJ Jones' category.

We can debate about who has the best Quarterback or who has the best Running Back. I think it's obvious they're all four pretty special athletes. But, this game, as are most all Football Games was decided upfront. Denison controlled the line of scrimmage and that's why they won the Football Game.

When Sherman took Waymon and put him out wide in an empty set they were dead..no back ..no good...Denison didn't shut him completely down sherman took him out of the game..better game if they hand him the ball 30 times...Jackets feasted on a little hot head QB..running for his life..

Not likely Jimmy... Just because Sherman fans have in large part grown a custom to Sherman's long 1 game postseason runs, don't lump us in. Either way...we won district and beat the pulp out of the bearkitties, so you'd have to call it a successful season. Oh yeah, most of our studs are back, including the best player on the field during the Axe game, DJ and the 2nd best player on the field during the Axe game (playing for the first time in over a month) Jordan The thought of Jordan and especially DJ getting a year better is enough to make you go ahead and start looking toward 2010...so let's go with 2009 Axe score of: Denison 52 Sherman 14. We'll call off the dogs late

Posted by: MP Why do the Sherman coaches like running the same plays over and over and over and over when apparently they were NOT WORKING!!!! And do they have so obsession with Carter. He's not a good leader especially when he comes to the sidelines to throw his little temper tantrums. Props to the Denison players and coaches. Good luck in the playoffs and Good luck to Sherman.

Waymon who? DJ (TD) Jones again shows Sherman what they WISH they had. Oh well Sherman, your question was answered. Of course, we already had it stored away as fact. The best player on the field keeps the axe...of course the 2nd and probably 3rd best player on the field ALSO keeps the axe...

Posted by: Mike I would agree with the Sherman Fan that Young got out Coached again. I guess he is going to give those time outs he didnt use at the end of the game away as Christmas Gifts. Coach thanks for kicking it to 21 to start the second half. Lets dont forget Cody White did go for 2 after the first Denison score. Way to destroy the momentum that your team had just worked a quarter and a half to get. I thought Bob Brown was back on the sidelines for a moment. Go Jackets

Sherman has lost 5 out of 6 if your scoring along, and I happen to be doing just that. But hey Sherman fans, you can hang your hat on the fact that your kitties were flag football champs this summer. Too bad when Coach Young decided it would make a statement to start the second half by kicking the ball to the "Best player on the field" that Sherman couldn't just pull his flag or touch him down. Come to think of it....I don't think he was touched. Good luck to Sherman in the playoffs and once again, congrats on the fantastic performance in the powder puff league this past summer.

Then people can write on here about you and say how awful you are. Denison's better than they are. Bottom line, people use that outcoached crap all the time. You need to get a clue. I am an Austin College student and along with many other friends we stay in line for over 3 hours to get tickets to see the game between Sherman/Denison. That was a great game and we would like to have the opportunity to comeback next year, but how can we get tickets for next year without waiting in line for over 3 hours?

Well, Well, Well. I think people should listen to me more often when it comes to this game. This is my third comment now. DJ Jones is the better runningback. 3 touchdowns, over 200 yards. Waymon 1 td and only 60 yards. I doubt tcu will even want him after that one anymore. And apparently shalamar is a beast helping the d to keep him to only 60 yards. This year there should be no doubt in shermans mind who the best team is. Denison for the state chamionship

Why dont you just go to the game and watch, then come back and try and say sherman has a better team. Waymon was stopped last year. Thats why sherman had to pass. and # 33 wont have to worry about waymon anyways. The middle linebacker brandon jefferys will knock him out before he even gets to the secondary.

to larry waymon james is better than Dj not by a lot but is better and dension has less than 900 passing yards on the season as to where sherman has over 1600 so WHO is one demensional? aso Dj has around 200 more yards than waymon on 30 more carries. Sherman's offfense will prevail in this one 49-44

The difference will be made on the sidelines, what everyone has failed to mention is, Bob Brown is no longer on the sidelines, Coach White is able to adjust and the coaches and kids respect him and will never settle, if you lost to Bob you will not even be in the game come fourth quarter with Coach White. Denison by double digits.

Denison is more of a one dimensional team than Sherman. And why would either team go to the air when both have such great running backs. We'll just see how many times your #33 gets ran over by the real #21. Just because he's fast doesn't mean he can take down Waymon. Sherman 59 Denison 55

Last year denison had a all sophmore team with no experience and like 3 wins on the season. Sherman had a senior team that was better then denison but still got beat by the younger team. Denison has a crazy good team this year and no team we have played, or will play can stop the offense. To much talent. DJ Jones has the most rushing yards in the state. Look it up, www.maxpreps.com And sherman is 1 deminsional with Waymon. Stop him, stop sherman. Our defense is outstanding this year showing two shutouts. Waymon may make it into the secondary but number 33 shalamar traylor is faster then anyone on the field and will have no problem stopping waymon. Just like last year, waymon had his two or three breaks but was kept under raps. Sheman had to go to the air. And if Jordan Taylor is back Sherman might as well crank up the bus at half time. Denison wins this one 52-21

I have been a Bearcat fan, since my kids went to Sherman. But, deep down, my heart will always belong to Denison. I just want it to be a great game, no injuries and lots of fun. Good luck to the YellowJackets and the Sherman Bearcats.

It will be a great game, one for the ages. Denison has too much fire power in this one though. But I will give Sherman credit where it is due, but the Kitty Cats will not be able to shut down all the athletes that Denison have. Denison 52 Sherman 35
