There is no question Major League Baseball has arguably one of the best All-Star breaks of all the major sports. Having said that, it needs some major work.

For one, a big decision has to be made. Do league officials want the All-Star Game to decide which league gets home field advantage in the World Series or do they want it to be a pure exhibition of baseball's biggest names? Because one can't go with the other and that's exactly how it is right now.

If you want it to decide home field advantage (which I think is ridiculous) then you can't let fans vote for the players AND you can't have one player from every team. The managers coaching the game should decide. I love the cheering masses, in fact, I'm one of them. But let's be honest, we don't know what we're talking about, at least not enough to be factor into which league will ultimately gets home field advantage in the biggest series of the year. Understandably so, fans want to see their favorite players in the game, but when so much is on the line, a popularity contest shouldn't be the way its decided.

Combine straight ballot voting with each team needing a representative and you have a mixture of players that shouldn't belong there and have no invested interest in the game. Tell me, will a player from the Washington Nationals or Oakland Athletics really care whether they win or lose. Wouldn't you rather see a player just as good from a contender who is actually helping his team do something during the season, play in the game?

Now, if you want this thing to be an exhibition, well then everything I have just said is moot and they should keep it the way it is, without it counting for home field advantage in the World Series.

How do you think the All-Star Game rosters and format should be set up? Let us know!

I have two problems with the fans voting. One has to do with choosing players based upon popularity, rather than performance. Secondly, any fan can "vote" as many times as they choose. It's like that stupid American Idol crap on TV. That isn't really voting, it's stuffing the ballot box. Anyway, I just made a suggestion. I haven't watched an entire All Star game for many years, and in fact seldom watch more than a few innings. Remember Kruk backing out of the box when facing Randy Johnson (I beleive), several years ago? I believe most players find it an honor to be selected, but the games themselves are a rather poor example of baseball. As one example, pulling players just to let others get into the game is not how the game should be played at this level.

it's an all star game that showcases the sport. absolutely fans should vote. they should see the stars, the players they know and love. for the most party the right players get in (except for derek jeter ever stinkin year). as far as hall of fame players deciding? no way. contemporaries and peers should continue to choose. the bench.

I think the fans should vote for the starters. The players should get to vote for the bench position players and a pitcher. Then the manager fills out the roster. Not every team should be represented.

I like having the outcome determine home field advantage for the WS. However, I have never cared for voting by fans. EVERY year there are one or two top vote getters who have been out of the lineup for a significant part of the season, and don't have the numbers to earn a place on the AS roster...a stinkin' popularity contest. Having at least one player from each team is fine with me, but I believe a panel of Hall of Fame players and coaches should do the deciding of who is selected, and who isn't.
