With one out left to get, first base umpire Jim Joyce cost Tigers P Armando Gallaraga a perfect game last night when he blew a call. If Major League Baseball had instant replay like pro football, basketball, and hockey use, we wouldn't be talking about it.
It's time baseball gets with the program and stops cheating its players and fans out of home runs, wins, and in last night's case, history, and implements a serious replay rule. Baseball purists are sure to fight it, but they also fought the designated hitter, extending the playoffs, and interleague play, all facets of the game that players and fans have adapted to, if not embraced.
For those worried about the delay instant replay would cause, may I remind you we're talking about baseball, the slowest game humans play aside from golf. Baseball. The game that has roughly 10 seconds of action for every minute during a game. The game that can take four hours to play 9 innings. The game that never ends in a tie (except for All-Star Games...whoops).
As a baseball fan I feel awful for Joyce and Galarraga. And only Major League Baseball can make it better. Sports constantly evolve. It's time baseball got the memo.
