Another sad day for SWC, Big 8 traditional fans

I remember the day I learned of the SWC demise. I couldn't believe it. There were so many rivalries that would no longer share in their tradition anymore. But I was a Baylor guy, so I was ok. The Bears would still get the chance to play Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Texas. Sure we would miss TCU, SMU, Rice and Houston, but at least we had something.

Today's news of the Big 12 split wasn't as easy. Not just because Baylor seems to be the odd man out, but because of the all the Big 8 rivalries that will be split as well. OU and Nebraska in different conferences? Yikes! The possibility of a Missouri-Kansas split? Hard to take. And of course, Baylor being pushed out on their own with no home.

I really wish the Big 12 could  have figured out a way to make it work, but college sports is a big money game, I get it. In the end, the universities have to fend for themselves, and look out for number one. I get that too. But it was a good league, often represented in the nation's top sporting events. OU and Texas made sure that a Big 12 team was always in the mix in the national championship picture. Now it looks like they will do that in the Pac-10, or Pac-16, or the Big-Pac, or whatever.

For OU, Texas, OSU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Colorado, these are exciting times. They will likely pair up with the two Arizona schools and form a great Eastern division. Nebraska should fit right in with the Big Ten, but they cut ties with every school they've ever been associated with.

As for Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and maybe Missouri... the search is on for a new league. Maybe the Mountain West, maybe Conference USA, or maybe something else. But one thing is for certain... it won't be the same, ever.
