Bring Back the Refs!

Last year the NFL offseason was marred by the NFL players strike. Fans were outraged, and followed day-by-day until the situation was resolved. The season went along more or less unchanged after that.

This year, the NFL referee's went on strike. It registered with some, but not near as much as the players strike, and rightfully so. As the preseason went on, it became more and more likely that the NFL would use replacement refs. And that's what happened.

The first three weeks of the season had their fair share of blown calls, with the replacement refs getting a lot of flack. A lot of it was justified, but it wasn't until last night that it really came to a head.

If you haven't seen the final play of Monday's Packers-Seahawks game, check it out. Green Bay cornerback MD Jennings clearly has the ball in his hands, while Seattle reciever Golden Tate, barely gets  a hand on it. The refs, or at least one of them, signaled a touchdown as the players fell to the ground, saying there was duel possession, and that the tie goes to the offense. Touchdown Seattle.

Fans now today everyone has been weighing in on what they think, and I feel it's important I do too.

The NFL has an obligation to it's fans, to do everything it can to bring a good package to the them Right now it is not doing that. I'm not in the meetings between referee union reps and the NFL so I cannot say if the NFL is making a good-faith effort, but what they are doing is not working.

Fans around the country need to make their cries for at least competent officiating loud, whether it be by writing a letter, going on twitter or facebook, or just not watching the NFL until the dispute is resolved.

Personally, I believe this will be resolved within the next two weeks. The NFL has been embarrassed on national TV, and they will act. Roger Goodell isn't stupid. But until then, calls will continue to be blown, and it's the fans who will suffer. Here's hoping the NFL wises up.
