The Mavericks made a clear statement on draft night. They're going for it.
The Mavericks traded down from the 17th pick, and then tried to trade out of 24. They want as little guaranteed money on the books as possible. Which tells me, that in their minds, they are players for Deron Williams.
If it works, and Deron comes to Dallas, it will be genius move on the part of Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson. If it blows up in their face, they will take heat. But understand this... at least they put themselves in position to have a seat at the Williams table. I can't tell you how many teams would love to be players that have no chance. The Mavericks have a chance. Maybe even a good chance.
Was it worth it? Yes. Don't underestimate the potential Williams signing. Not only do you get a great player, but it opens the door for other great players. This is a league where good players want to play on good teams. They take less money to play with stars. Look at Miami. Players line up to get on a roster with LeBron, Wade, etc. The Mavericks move to get Williams could lead to them getting Dwight Howard, or someone else.
A huge decision is coming. The Mavericks hope that Williams makes the right decision, and comes home.
