After a week of watching free agents fly off the board, the Mavericks made their move, then another, and all of a sudden, this team ain't half bad.
The Mavs were able to "keep the powder dry" by gaining tons of expiring contracts. By agreeing to a one year, $8 million contract with Chris Kaman, then trading for Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones (both expiring), not only did they become a better basketball team, they became a more "flexible" basketball team.
The Mavericks Brain Trust (MBT) was caught off guard when they were spurned by Deron Williams. It took them awhile to recover. Now Collison is no Deron Williams. But he is 15 years younger than last year's point guard, and has quickness and upside. I love the trade. And good for Ian Mahimi getting a 4 year, $16 million deal. That wasn't going to happen in Dallas, so really, the Mavs got something (alot of something) for nothing.
Kaman gives the Mavs a nice stop gap center. The Mavs are hoping Dwight Howard gets to free agency next year and they can make their push with several expiring contracts to sign and trade in return (much like the Nets attempted to do with Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, etc).
It hasn't been a perfect offseason, far from it. But the Mavs did have a good first day in free agency. They found their point guard. They found their center. Now... they just have to find their 2nd superstar.
