Pierzynski Pick-up Savvy Move by the Rangers

If you're a Texas Rangers fan, this probably hasn't been a great fall for you.

If you're a Texas Rangers fan, this probably hasn't been a great fall for you.

First, the Rangers blow a late division lead to the A's, and miss the playoffs. Then comes the offseason.

The Rangers lose Mike Napoli, Michael Young, and most recently, Mike Adams. Then the Ranger's offseason targets start going elsewhere. Zach Grienke to the Dodgers, James Shields to the Royals, Justin Upton stays with Arizona, and the Josh Hamilton, the Ranger's best player, goes and signs with the division rival Angels. Not how Nolan Ryan and Co. drew it up.

But even with all those losses, the Rangers have a team that is still built to contend. They picked up a quality reliever, albeit one who's coming off of Tommy John surgery, in Joakim Soria, and he can be good, very good in fact. Still, the offseason has been pretty sparse.

But finally a little bit of good news for the Rangers today. They've signed catcher AJ Pierzynski to a 1 year deal, pending a physical. Now a lot of people may not get that excited about a career .250, 15 home run hitter. But they should. He's not a superstar, but he's a veteran presence, who can hit eighth or ninth, and can catch a good game. Geovanny Soto has had his good years, and bad years, but Pierzynski is far more consistent. He gives the Rangers what they need.

So while this Rangers team may not have the superstar quotient they have had in the past couple of years, this team has a good pitching staff, which only is getting better, an above average lineup, and plenty of young talent ready to make an impact. Pierzynski helps tie all of that together.
