March 4, 2008
The snowfall of Nevertheless, a bit of detective work using Oklahoma Mesonet data and historic information from DFW shows that this snowfall is the heaviest March snowfall for Durant since 1947. It is a record snowfall for March 3rd, breaking the old record of 1.5” from 1971. It also ties for the 5th heaviest single-day snowfall ever in March.
Similar data comes from Hugo: The snow of 4” in that location is a March 3rd record, and the 3rd heaviest March snow of record for Hugo.
The snowfall at DFW airport for March 3 was a record as well…the snows in Durant and Hugo were records….so it makes sense that the snows in Fannin and Grayson Counties were also of record caliber for the date, and probably in the top 10 snowfalls of record for March.
In fact, the heavy snow areas received about their annual average snowfall in this single event. Just another weird footnote to what has been a very odd winter of 2007-2008!
