The turbulent spring weather has given way in the past few weeks to typical summer heat and scattered thunderstorms. I thought this would be a good time to see how we’re doing for the month of June as it winds down.

Rainfall has been very patchy, which is to be expected this time of year. Here’s why: in the fall, winter and spring months, weather systems tend to be larger and stronger and therefore influence bigger “chunks” of real estate as they move along. Summertime rain systems tend to be more localized and shower/thunderstorm activity more scattered in nature.

The graphic shows total rainfall June 1-23 with a comparison to an average three weeks in June. Overall, the best soil moisture is over northern and eastern areas with western and southern spots quite a bit drier.

 Of course, July and August tend to be hot and dry so keep your sprinkler  handy.
