July Front: Rain Rip-Off!

July14, 2008

If you will recall Friday’s forecast I had a 40% chance of rain in for Sunday. When the forecast was updated Saturday night by the National Weather Service, rain prospects were still posted at 40% for Sunday.

It was of course very disappointing to see most of Texoma get shorted with no rainfall whatsoever. This is one of those examples where the set-up is good, rain is actually falling (north of us Saturday night), and for a variety of subtle reasons the system shifts around you, which left most of Texoma dry. Best as I can figure, it was a combination of the ridge remaining a bit too strong over us plus the frontal passage at night making for less lift, lacking daytime heating.

The pattern ahead into this weekend should be hot, but probably below a hundred degrees. There will be a chance for a few more storms as the front retreats northward Tuesday-Wednesday. Another weak front may try to make a weekend run at us (again): something to at least hope for in ways of rain. Also, an upper trough currently over  Florida may retrograde; that is, move westward. This would provide further life for weekend rainfall. This is still questionable but something to watch.
