Windy and Warm By Weekend: UPDATED 4 February

UPDATE: 4 February, 2009

The weather scene is coming together as expected. It's going to be windy with unseasonably warm temperatures as we move into the weekend. Look for a new blog I'll post Friday regarding rain chances for next week.

Take Care,

Steve

Windy and Warm Later This Week

2 February 2009

Seasonably cold weather through Wednesday will be replaced by very windy and much warmer as the weekend comes calling. The map shows why it will be windy.

The arid pattern we’ve been stuck in thus far in 2009 will be further aggravated by the wind; making for a higher fire danger beginning Thursday and lasting until at least Sunday.

There’s some hope for rain as an upper trough moves in from the west around February 9th or 10th….but that’s too far away to give great confidence just yet.  Stay tuned!

Hi Steve, I was wondering what is the average date for the last freeze in Texoma? Thanks!

David, The long-term outlook into the spring and summer continues to show a persistent “La Nina” pattern with colder than normal waters in the Pacific Ocean. This is never good for Texas and Oklahoma rainfall. With less rainfall, the drier soil and vegetation heats more quickly; so if it runs dry during the next few months, then it will likely be hotter than average this summer. As to whether it’ll be on par with 1980…that’s a whole different ball game. I simply don’t know. I’ll just hope for the best and see what comes. Take Care, Steve

Steve, I start to get nervous when it's very warm and windy in February. I'll never forget 1980 when we had a high of 99F in February. What followed was a summer of record high temperatures and extreme drought. Do you see a similar setup for this year?
