May 2010 has been a warm one, with daytime highs above average on 22 out of 31 days. The average daily maximum was 4 degrees higher than "normal", which is very significant.

June begins in the frying pan too, with daytime highs 10-15 degrees above average each day.
Highs will flirt with 100 by this weekend!

It’s all thanks to a building upper ridge, which is warming the lower atmosphere from a sinking motion. If you’ve ever used a tire pump and felt the bottom portion get hot, it’s the same mechanism at work: air is compressed and heated.

Of course, the rate of compression is much less in the atmosphere than in your tire pump. But it’s a significant amount as we'll see during each summer heat wave!

A “decent” front may bring some slightly cooler weather (but still warmer than average) by the middle of next week.

Take Care,
