June 2010 will go down in the record books as 3rd hottest. 1980 just beat out 2010. This year, June had an average temperature of 84.9 degrees, while June 1980 had one of 85.0 degrees. A cool spell the last few of June kept 2010 in 3rd place.
The all-time record hottest June of 1953 had an average temperature of 85.5 degrees. This record is also within reach if heat similar to recent weeks continues through the end of the month.
What's especially interesting about this early summer heat wave (unlike many others) is this: we haven't a single record high during the event. Unusually warm overnight lows/daytime highs 5-10 degrees above the daily average have done the trick.
During the 1980 event for instance, it was extremely hot the last 8 days of the month with daily records, but the first half of June that year saw temperatures more in line with the average than this year.
Texoma has now had above average temperatures on all but three occasions since May 21st.
