Big Pattern Change: More Spring-Like Weather

Texoma endured the most severe ice/snow periods during the first 11 days of February 2011, and one of the extended periods of cold since the late 1970s . Lows reached -2 at Ada, 5 at Ardmore and 10 at Sherman which all set new record lows on Feb 10th. Sulphur was the Texoma cold spot with -6 degrees the same morning.

The state of Oklahoma recorded its all-time record low of -31 degrees at Nowata also on Feb 10, 2011.
A rather abrupt pattern shift keeps us very mild and rather windy through Thursday (discussion continues below maps).
The pronounced north-to-south steering flow during Feb 1-11 allowed intense arctic surges to make it all the way to the Gulf coast. The position of the trough to our east helped strengthen this pattern and lock it into place, allowing it to persist for almost two weeks.
 The prevailing west-to-east flow of this week is keeping the cold air over Canada for now, and we should enjoy mild weather through Friday:
The forecast models agree well on changes beginning this weekend. The first of two cold fronts moves through Friday. Look for a chance of showers and cooler weather behind the front over the weekend; with a second frontal passage and chance of rain Tuesday-Wednesday of next week.
 Snow chances are near zero with the first front and also unlikely with the second, since the air mass behind each doesn’t look to be cold enough.
Disclaimer: Bitterly cold air to -40 degrees has re-built over the Yukon Territory of Canada, but the steering flow is unfavorable for this air to reach Texoma. An unexpected “buckle” in the jet would be a game-changer, but there are no indications of this happening.
