Close to Record Cold Feb 2-3

February 2011 came in with bitterly cold wind chills behind a very stout arctic front: as low as minus 15: Texoma hasn’t seen such a low wind chill value in many years. Wind will ease Wednesday but we’ll remain under the influence of the arctic weather system through Friday.

Snow/sleet report for Feb 1, 2011 (discussion continues below maps):

Lows will be near record values through Friday. Here are present record lows through Feb 4th:

City
Feb 2nd record low Feb 3rd record low Feb 4th record low
Ada 1 (1911) 1 (1985) -1(1996)
Antlers -10 (1951) 5 (1985) 3 (1996)
Ardmore -1 (1985) 6 (1989) 2 (1996)
Durant -4 (1951) 7 (1918) 3 (1996)
Sherman-Denison 2 (1951) 5 (1951) 5 (1996)

A few locations may fall below zero Wednesday or Thursday morning over southern Oklahoma.

Thursday, Feb 3rd will be the most likely morning for records to be matched or exceeded.

If you are tired of cold the news is not promising as the top three models I use (GFS, ECMWF and FNMOC) all depict another shot of very cold arctic air by Monday.

I’ll delve into this possibility further with a new blog I will post tomorrow. In the meantime…please drive very carefully if you must travel…and stay warm…

Take Care,
