Jan 9-10, 2012 Rainfall Totals

Another round of soaking rainfall graced Texoma soils and lakes Jan 9-10. As the maps below show, most locations received at least an inch of precipitation with many spots in the 1-1/2” to 2” range:

The drought has gradually eased during the past few months - the soil moisture has been replenished to such an extent as to almost completely remove the eastern half of Texoma from a drought configuration. An area of “slight drought” extends from Atoka to Madill to Whitesboro eastward.

Areas west of this line area still in a moderate, but steadily improving, drought situation. The easternmost portions of Texoma in Choctaw and Pushmataha counties were recently declared to be completely out of the drought.

Jim, What I believe you refer to is the NAO or North Atlantic Oscillation, and it's been mostly positive this winter. The AO (Arctic Oscillation) is also unfavorable for the colder arctic air to move our way. No signs of either one changing in the next two weeks…so cold air visits will be brief and not really all that cold. Take Care, Steve

Any chance of the Greenland block happening any time soon so we can start having a real winter?

The La Nina pattern does not favor extended cold wet periods, but as you know it only takes one day of the right conditions to get snow or ice. However, the overall odds for snow or ice in Texoma before winter ends are less than in an average season. Hope that helps! Take Care, Steve
