March 2012: Drier Pattern Emerging?

The unusually wet pattern we enjoyed in January and February helped erase the drought that plagued Texoma for the summer and fall of 2011. However, March 2012 is shaping up to be drier than the past few months on both sides of the Red River.

A consistent “parade” of mid-level lows brought ample opportunities for rainfall in Jan-Feb and frequent changes in temperature too:

Now, a shift in the steering flow points toward a stronger ridge over the western United States. The ridge diverts the troughs northward, favoring drier weather here:

This is a general outlook and does not speak to an individual storm or day where it might rain. However, it does point to a higher probability of drier times ahead.

Steve LaNore

What happened to the drier pattern? it seemed dry for about a week, and now we have chances of rain almost every day.

Tom, my opinion is that if we are in the middle of La Nina, I'm planning on backing my spring up a month! Last year I got a late start and by mid June, it was 100 degrees. I missed the whole summer of gardening and sunning, just too hot. I'm starting right now and if June is like July, I still got 3 to 3/12 months of summer like weather. As far as a frost, I think light frosts are possible.

I know you say a dryer pattern is emerging, but do you think there is any chance for a late winter blast like past winters or are we headed toward an early spring?

Nancy, I think you mean "La Nina", as we've been in this winter. NOAA says that will fizzle out over the next month or two. The summer is tough to predict but it's unlikely to be as hot or as dry as last summer...but I suspect it will still be a bit hotter than average. The good news: Since summer 2011 was the hottest EVER here, a repeat this year is very unlikely because the weather pattern is different too. As always we'll have to just hide and watch on the L O N G range predictions as they are like Swiss cheese. Take Care, Steve

I see signs of the drought returning, and we are too warm, if this continues this summer may be worse than 2011. A lot of our grass is still dead, and trees. What do you think Steve, 2012 hotter than 2011?

Does this El Nino winter continue into this spring/summer? Are we in for another summer of 2011? Praying not!
