Outlook calls for odds in favor of a warm May

The 30-day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) says the odds favor a warm May in Texoma and almost all of the southern U.S.

The odds are:

  • >>>About 5 to 2 in favor of a warmer than average May compared to a cooler than average one (47% to 20%)
  • >>>About 3 to 2 that we'll have a warm May rather than one with "normal" temperatures (47% to 33%)

(discussion continues below map):

This is not good news for Texoma; March was the 3rd warmest on record and April was four degrees above the average making it the 9th warmest. Warmer-than-average weather increases evaporation, and since rainfall has slacked off during the past several weeks, soils are already beginning to dry out.

The outlook for precipitation in May is less definite with about equal chances of normal, dry, or wet conditions during the month.
