September Weather Summary

September 2010 goes into the record books as one of extremes for Texoma.

The month’s most notable weather event was during the passage of Tropical Depression “Hermine” on September 8th, when four tornadoes touched down in Texoma: three in southern Oklahoma and one in north Texas. The most intense was an EF1 (winds 111-135mph), in Bryan County near Calera. It destroyed a mobile home and a few other non-permanent buildings.
An EF0 in Carter County near Lone Grove produced moderate damage to four structures.  Two other EF0 (winds less than 86mph) tornadoes one near Lindsey, TX and one just south of Marietta, OK produced no damage. There were no fatalities or serious injuries in any of these tornado events. They were very brief and thus had short damage paths.
Very heavy rain also fell with the passing system. Amounts ranged from 3-6” for the three days when Hermine influenced Texoma weather.
After the rain stopped the heat came. A two-week long hot spell saw daily highs 5-10 degrees above average from the 10th through the 23rd. A cold front and shift in the upper pattern pushed away the stubborn upper high which brought the heat, and allowed some very nice fall weather to round out the last five days of the month.
Here’s a city-by-city look at a very wet September for Texoma. The majority of this occurred with "Hermine" on Sep 7-9th:
September 2010 Rainfall
City Sep 2010 Rainfall (inches)
Ada 5.67
Antlers 7.45
Ardmore 6.13
Atoka 6.28
Bonham 4.61
Durant 9.30
Gainesville 7.44
Hugo 6.25
Madill 9.43
Marietta 6.82
Paris 3.63
Sherman-Denison 6.52
Sulphur 5.62
Tishomingo 6.56
The 30-year average September rainfall is about four inches.
Looking ahead, a well-developed La Nina pattern suggests below normal rainfall in the months to come. Warmer than normal days and cooler than average nighttime lows are also typical with a LaNina wind flow.
