If you’re a kid, you probably hope for snow to get out of a little school, right? If you’re a farmer or gardener and have already put in your tomatoes, you are probably hoping that winter is long-gone, right? I might have some bad news for both the kiddos and the tomato planters…at least, those that reside on the Oklahoma side of the river. If you live there, you just MIGHT get some snow Friday night and Saturday morning. Because it will be a weekend event, the kids are out of luck…sorry!   My apologies to the farmers and gardeners too!

It’s still several days away, so things can definitely change between now and then. But as of now, it looks like our northern counties could see a changeover from rain to snow late Friday night (currently, only a 30% chance). If the white stuff does fall, it really won’t amount to much as temperatures should stay above freezing at the surface. Below, I have posted some forecasted morning lows for Saturday morning.

Saturday Morning Forecasted Lows
(in degrees F):

Texas                                      Oklahoma
Sherman        35                     Ardmore   35
Paris               36                     Ada            34
Gainesville    36                      Duncan    34
Bonham         35                     Durant       36

Now, it’s not completely unusual to get cold weather and/or snow in the month of March. In fact, you only have to think back to last year to remember that we actually had a March snowstorm. March 5, 2008 was a nice mild, spring-like day with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. But winter decided to come back in full force the following day. On March 6th, 2008, much of the Texoma area received snow-in some areas, lots of it! Sherman-Denison had 9 inches of snowfall on that day (see photo below)!

March 24th of last year was our last frost and freeze (in some spots) for the season.   Antlers, OK dropped down to 24 degrees. The low in Sherman-Denison was 34 degrees. The average last freeze date for Texoma ranges from March 22-March 31st.

So, the last frost day will soon be upon us. The transition to Spring is always a tricky time of the year when it comes to the weather. You get anything from tornadoes to snow and just about everything in between. Spring might be here according to the calendar, but winter isn’t ready to go away just yet! Keep the winter coats handy a little longer and stay tuned to the forecast to see if you might get any of the white stuff!
