The Cold, Hard Facts
April 7, 2009

Well, we certainly had a hard freeze in many spots this morning.  This is a very unusual pattern for this time of year.  The cold weather is not good news for local farmers.  It will be at least a week before we know what kind of impact these temperatures had on crops around the region.  But, Mike Schulte, director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, says the cold weather will probably have a large impact.

Below, I listed some interesting facts about this latest cold blast and also posted some of the morning lows and record breaking temperatures for today.

●  This morning was the coldest it has been since March 2nd.
●  Most locations were at or below freezing for 2 to 6 hours.
●  The average last hard freeze occurs March 4-10th (depending on      where you live).
●  The average last freeze occurs March 22-31 (also depends on where you live).

  Today's Low Record Low
Sherman 30 29 (1971)
Ardmore 28 27 (1939)
Atoka *27 27 (1939)
Duncan *21 27 (1939)
Durant *25 26 (1936)
Madill *24 30 (1969)
Marietta *19 31 (1971)

(* tied or broke previous record)

Yes, it was chilly Tuesday morning, but it didn't last long, and most of our plants were not affected. Now, 2 days later, it's hotter than heck, there are fires burning out of control all around us, and the air is so thick with smoke we can't even go outside without endangering our health. Frankly, I prefer the cold!
