SHERMAN, Tex. -- A change in attendance zones could affect where your child goes to school. School administrators are meeting Monday evening to talk about the proposed changes.

Superintendent Al Hambrick is briefing school board members about the latest details of the planned re-zoning. In August of 2008, about 800 to 900 students will switch elementary schools.

Hambrick says there are many benefits to the re-zoning and that one of the primary goals is create more neighborhood schools. The plan would mean that many students would attend class closer to home, but some parents have mixed emotions about the plans.

One parent we talked to says the move will allow her daughter to walk to school, rather than taking an hour-long bus trip to school each day.

Hambrick reassures that regardless of where each student is assigned, the quality of education will remain high, and he expects students to adjust well to the change.

"I think we have great teachers, great staff. At those schools, the curriculum is the same, our expectations are the same, and in many cases the instruction is very, very close to being the same. I think they'll adjust," Hambrick says.

Hambrick says that final approval for the re-zoning is set to be decided by the school board on December 17th.

Perrin Elementary is to become an alternative learning campus.

The changes are scheduled to take effect for the 2008-09 school year.

I for one am excited about the rezoning! It's about time. My kids spend 2 total hours a day on the bus. Maybe now their travel time will be cut down. And - we'll get to go to a new school with decent parents.
