GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- It may look like another trash dumpster, but look closely and you'll see it’s only for recycling. It's part of a new initiative that Grayson County leaders say they're very proud of.

Trash piles up everywhere- in dumpsters, behind stores, on the street, and on the curb. Now, there's a new place to take some of that material.

“We need to do all we can to protect landfill and make last as long as we can. We also need to protect environment. By recycling we do both of those."

County Commissioner Johnny Waldrip says there wasn't a place in Grayson County where people could go until now.

“I read an editorial in paper that have no rural recycling, thought about and said I think I could come up with a plan so we are opening the Precinct 1 Barn to have a recycle center," says IESI division manager Richard West.

That center, located at 1213 FM 1417 in Sherman, is already getting plenty of use in its first day of operation.

The center only accepts approved items like aluminum, tin, steel, cardboard, paper, and certain plastics.

"We’re asking please just do recyclables. The sign there states what you can bring. If it turns into trash dump, then it will have to close," Waldrip says.

Waldrip says the center is part of a county pilot program that could grow if the demand is out there.

"It’s all up to the people if it works or not. Follow the rules, and we can recycle in other places across the county."

Anyone in the county can drop off their recyclables at the center, which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
