SHERMAN, Tex. -- Developers of a new master-planned golf community say it will provide more than just a place to tee off. City leaders say it will give Sherman an economic boost.
A semi-private golf course and a 3,000 lot neighborhood make up a master community called ‘Sherman Hills,’ and developers say it is the first of its kind for our area.
“It’s something unique in this area for sure. No one's had a master community. What's really unique is the golf course itself. There are a lot of elevation changes through the property that really make it very unique." Sherman Hills director of golf John Stovall says.
Crews broke ground Wednesday on the new Sherman Hills Club House, part of the golf course that they plan to have ready by next spring.
It’s an attraction that officials hope will lead to even more home construction.
“The golf course will open to the public in March, spring 2008. The hold-up is roads and then model homes as soon as the road gets in. Road probably finished tentatively scheduled for February 1st. That's really when models can start."
The new community has taken more than five years of planning and hard work, but it's a different sight today and one step closer to reality.
“To finally get going, get the golf course open and get home sales started. The main thing is, for now is to get the cart barn built and club house built and get the golf course open and people out here playing."
Mayor Bill Magers says the course will bring golfers and tourists, as well as new homeowners and taxpayers, to the area, which is good news for Sherman’s economy.
“This is the groundbreaking for largest development in Sherman. There are home sites available for spring of this year. Looking forward, it’s a great deal for Sherman."
