SHERMAN, Tex. ― The holidays are right around the corner and local churches are asking for donations so that children will receive gifts this holiday season. Hagerman Baptist Church is accepting donations of gift-filled shoe boxes.

The church is asking for shoe boxes filled with toys, personal hygiene items, socks, or anything you feel can fit in a shoebox. The boxes they collect will be shipped to children all over the world for Christmas.

Church officials say they are hoping to ship over 1,000 boxes this year with the support of the community.

"It’s really neat just to see people willing to go beyond themselves at Christmas time to give to those in need," Hagerman Baptist Church associate pastor Michael McMinn said.

McMinn he says they are hoping to fill up a trailer full of boxes. The church will be collecting boxes until November 23.

Our church - Ector Baptist - just dropped off our filled shoeboxes to Hagerman. Hagerman is one of the designated "drop-off" points for the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. Their web-site is www.samaritanspurse.org. The name of the organization says it all. When was the last time you had an opportunity to be a "Good Samaritan". It's time for all of us to show our concern and support in tangible ways...and especially right in our own backyard. The shame on us is that we only seem to think of this at the holidays.
