SHERMAN, TX ― The Fourth Annual Wilson N. Jones Community Breakfast took place Thursday morning at Austin College. Former Dallas Maverick and NBA All-Star Rolando Blackman was the guest speaker. Rashi Vats has more.

Over 200 members from the community gathered this morning to attend the 4th annual Wilson N. Jones Community Breakfast at the Wright Center at Austin College.

“I think it is going great. We have a great crowd. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, so I think it will be a fun breakfast for everyone. Plus a great opportunity for us to honor Dr. Castleberry in our community,” said Julie Mitchell, Wilson N. Jones Foundation coordinator.

Dr. Mack Castleberry received the Emmet Essin Community Service Award.

“We look for individuals who have given just above and beyond their time and efforts to our community, and he's very involved in different organizations around the community, and has been for the 50 plus years that he's lived here,” Mitchell said.

The main speaker was four-time NBA All-Star and former Dallas Maverick Rolando Blackman, who talked about teamwork on and off the court.

“Teamwork that moves the community forward to be able to develop some of the great that happen as far as a person like me. Community was a very big part of what was going on, and the main thing is that no one makes it alone. You have to be around people and share,” Blackman said.

Mitchell, the event’s coordinator, says the theme of teamwork is fitting in these tough economic times.

“It's just in this time and age it is very important for us to just help each other, and there are a lot of organizations out there that unfortunately don't have the funds to maybe do everything that they want to do, and by having volunteers helping them they can really produce and provide services to the community that may not be available if they weren't around.”

Mitchell says the breakfast was a success, and if you weren't able to make it this time around, you'll have an opportunity next year.
