Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program application deadline is Feb. 16

Grayson County has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program in the amount of $69,846.00. Applications are being accepted through the Grayson County United Way office. The deadline for submitting is February 16, 2009.

The selection is made by a National Board of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.; and the United Way of America. The Local Emergency Food and Shelter Board is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county.

A Local Board made up of representatives from the community will determine how the funds awarded to Grayson County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local E.F.S.P. Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to
receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2)
have an accounting system, 3) practice nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying
agencies are urged to apply.

In 2008, Grayson County distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds to The Crisis Center, Denison Helping Hands, North Texas Youth Connection, Grayson County Shelter, The Key-Care Center, The Salvation Army, Sherman Social Services, Tri-County Senior Nutrition Project, and Denison Housing Authority.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Velma Starks, United Way of Grayson County, 903-893-1920, Extension 4 for an application. The deadline for submitting applications is February 16, 2009.
