United Way starts year with a bang

Hundreds hit the square in downtown Sherman to kick-off this year’s Grayson County United Way campaign on Saturday. There were burgers hot off the grill, live music and several non-profit agencies set up on the court house lawn.

"The theme is a Texas sized need with a Grayson County heart, that is how they fill it. So it's a lot of fun, beautiful weather, a lot of folks showing up having a good time,” said Jason Taylor, co-chair of the United Way campaign committee.

The turnout was bigger than ever, with 300 to 400 people taking part in the celebration, that’s more than double last year’s attendance. And United Way co-chair Sheriff Keith Gary says it's their heart that gives United Way the help it needs.

"These are people who care about each other, they care about their fellow man, their neighbors and today's an indication of that,” said Gary.

The event wasn’t just about the games and free food, it's about a community coming together to help others. And with the recession hitting hard this year, United Way workers say the need is greater than ever to help agencies that serve the community.

"Being the economic times being what they are, it's a tough year this year, so that's why we're kicking off with a celebration today,” said Taylor.

And United Way’s goal for this year is to raise one more dollar than last year, which totals about $1.4 million. Sheriff Gary said it’s a big goal, but one he feels they can accomplish.

"I have every expectation that we're going to be able to match last year even better because of all the extra work that's put in,” said Gary.

Taylor said he has faith in the community to dig deep in their pockets and give what they can.

"Anybody who's lived in Texoma land for any amount of time knows that when there is a need Grayson County folks, Texomans, come together and they fill it, you know, every year you see it and it's what makes living in Grayson county and in Texoma wonderful," said Taylor.

The Grayson County United Way supports 23 non-profit organizations in the area.

What a great community event! Was really impressed with the shirts the United Way had made. I wonder who made them?
