DENISON, TX - Not only staff, but residents at the Grayson Homeless Shelter are also helping cook-up free meals for people who may not have a Thanksgiving dinner otherwise. And the gesture hits close to home as they help others, who like themselves, need an extra hand this holiday season.

"I'm thankful for everything I mean just being here, seriously I'm thankful that i have a roof over my head i have food every day, I have a bed to sleep in and I'm just thankful for pretty much every day,” said Shirley Daniel, a resident at the shelter.

Daniel has been a resident at the Grayson Homeless shelter since August. This holiday season she and her two children are helping others who are in need like she was just a few months ago.

"It's very humbling, it's just good to come here and receive help and know we can actually help everybody else that needs it,” said Daniel.

This Thanksgiving the shelter is preparing individual, home cooked meals to hand out Wednesday and Thursday.

"We have a lot of homeless in the area who live outdoors who will come by for meals, we have a lot of kids home for the holidays who will go hungry,” said Executive Director at the shelter Paige Furst.

Furst says the shelter is thankful for all the donations that make this year's free meals possible.

"And at the holidays people give to us so generously it's a time where we can be very generous with the community,” said Furst.

Staff and residents at the Grayson Homeless Shelter say there's something special about this place.

"We love to be able to give and what I love here our residents feel very blessed to be here,” said Furst.

Shelter staff said unlike larger organizations such as Salvation Army, they mainly serve locals in the surrounding neighborhoods who don't have transportation and pick up meals on foot. And they'll be handing out their hot meals all day Thursday to anyone who needs one.

“A lot of people don't have a lot of hope in other people and this place shows that they do have hope there's a lot of people out there that really do care,” said Daniel.

Donny makes a good point. This country never had any homeless people before Obama took office.
