Durant Main Street is excited about the fourth annual Downtown Holiday set for Saturday, December 5. The organization is pleased to bring back an outdoor ice skating rink to Downtown Durant this Christmas season. They hope citizens and visitors will enjoy the rink while also strolling through the businesses.
The dates of operation of this unique ice skating rink will be December 5 through January 5. The hours of operation will vary depending upon school being in session. The setup includes a portable 32’ x 60’ rink, and a maximum of 75 people will be able to skate at one time.
On Saturday, December 5, the rink will open at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting. The Downtown Holiday will be held throughout the day with carolers, and entertainers. The businesses will be featuring the sights, sounds, and smells of the season.
A “Night in Bethlehem” is a new feature this year and will depict the first Christmas carnival. The Western Meadows Baptist Church will lead the efforts to share this special touch of the season from 10-5. You can visit and have unique experiences at a bakery/candy store, scribe shop, metalworking shop, ornament shop, wreath-making shop, and a stable.
This attraction will be like traveling back in time to Bethlehem during the time of Jesus' birth. In the metal shop you will be making a Roman "bulla"; in the wreath-making shop you will make a laurel wreath; in the scribe shop you will make a scroll; in the bakery/candy store you will taste what they ate in those days; in the ornament shops you will make memorial ornaments to always remember your fun family night at The Night in Bethlehem. The stable is the traditional Christmas scene with live characters.
Other special visitors at the Downtown Holiday will include Santa, the newly formed Durant Community Theatre, the Chorvettes Stageworks Company, the Kemp Baptist Church, and the Durant Middle School and High School Show Choirs.
Durant Main Street Program Manager Donna Dow commented, “We are looking forward to a huge turnout on Saturday. Our local businesses are working hard to host open houses, provide special deals, and have vendor displays. Aside from all these incentives, shoppers can enjoy triple tickets for our Shopping Spree on Saturday, December 5.” She hopes everyone will stop by the outdoor ice skating rink on Market Square. “We are grateful for Cardinal Glass signing on to be a major sponsor. Eagle Suspensions is our event partner, and the City of Durant is allowing us to utilize Market Square for the event.”
Skaters will only have to pay $7 ($5 for use of the rink and $2 for skate rental). Group rates are available. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to schedule their Christmas parties to include the rink. Catering is available in order to complete the party package. Custom designed packages are sure to be popular.
