ARDMORE, OK - Senior citizens in Ardmore received boxes of food, thanks to a program sponsored by the Southern Oklahoma Nutrition Program.

Representatives from the SONP passed out boxes to 91 residents of Ardmore Village Senior Living facility Monday. The boxes contain 25 pounds of food ranging from fruit juice to dry cereal.

The giveaway happens once a month, and is available to any senior citizen 60 years or older who meets the income requirement.

Members of the SONP say programs like these are essential to some elderly residents who are on a fixed budget and have trouble buying food.

"When you see that need being met in your own back door it is such a blessing to know your able to help the seniors and the people in your own community," Rebecca Williams with SONP said.

Anyone interested in the program can apply at the Southern Oklahoma Nutrition Office in Wilson at (580) 668-3128 or in Marietta at (580) 276-5475.

Programs like this are so very important!!! I just bought a new home and after living here for almost 3 months I finally realised that the house next to me was vacant after all. It was actually home to an 89 year old lady who has no family in the area and who barely gets around enough to go from room to room. She is about 5'5" tall but weighs only 91 pounds. She went most days without food at all or just bread and jelly. I contacted meals on wheels and got her into the program but of course they don't provide 3 meals a day so I fill in by taking her a plate every time I cook or at least once a day. I feel so bad for anyone who is elderly and has no family and is on a fixed income, this could happen to any of us. It is very important to get involved and donate time or services because like I said, someday it could happen to any one of us and if it does we'll want someone to care and someone bring us food if we have none so get involved!!
