DAVIS – Medical professionals will be in full force June 3-7 to assist any Chickasaw Nation Department of Health diabetes patient on how to better care for themselves and manage their condition.

The diabetes camp will be held at The Inn at Treasure Valley. Do not expect campfires, tents or insects.

Do expect specialists, eye care experts, dental hygienists and other health professionals to train and educate diabetes sufferers on controlling blood sugar, proper eye care, wound care and topics of critical concern for those suffering from the disease.

Applications must be submitted by May 3 in order to attend.

Primarily aimed at adults, the camp has enjoyed past success.

“I have never met anyone who didn’t learn something about managing diabetes,” said Shondra McCage, Chickasaw Nation Medical Center

Diabetes Care Center Program manager. “It is a fun and informative way to learn about the disease. Medical staff will be present to answer questions throughout the event,” she added.

Applications and medical release forms are necessary to attend. Applications may be picked up at the diabetes care center or at satellite clinics in Ardmore, Tishomingo, Durant and Purcell.

Campers must be at least 12 years old and are allowed to bring one guest. The guest must also have a medical release form from their primary care physician, McCage said.

There is no cost or fee. Individuals selected to attend will be notified by May 10, McCage said.

For information concerning the camp, telephone McCage at (580) 421-4572.
