Denison HS “Fish Camp” set for Friday, July 27th

Fish Camp, the annual orientation for all incoming Denison High School freshmen, is set for Friday, July 27th from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the DHS Commons. Members of the Class of 2016 will have their student ID photos made and receive important information as well as free t-shirts at the event.

“Our Student Council helps host this, so you know it’s going to be great fun,” said DHS Counselor Carrie Boettger. “The purpose is to orient our freshmen in all areas of school life so they’ll be comfortable and confident on their first day at DHS. High school is a big step for these kids. We want it to be a positive experience, start to finish.”

The incoming freshmen will also view a video that introduces school officials, administrators, counselors, athletic directors and other school officials.

“The camp is a lot of fun…very high energy with great music…and pizza for lunch,” said Boettger. “We’ll also have interactive group sessions that address issues like peer pressure, attendance, personal relationships, and the pitfalls of substance abuse. Everyone will learn the rules governing personal dress and appearance, which will make pre-school shopping a lot easier for students and parents.”

“Later in the morning we’ll break into smaller groups for taking school ID photos and tours. There’s no charge for Fish Camp, and all incoming freshmen are urged to attend. This is a really fun and very important event that will hopefully eliminate a lot of stress for students when they start school on August 27th.”
