ARDMORE, Okla. — In early August 2012, a SUV-sized roving vehicle named Curiosity hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour, decelerated for seven minutes and landed gently in Gale Crater on Mars. Gentry Lee watched it happened that day, and he will share the excitement of Curiosity and its’ Mars exploration mission as he closes the 2012-2013 Profiles and Perspectives season.

Lee’s presentation, “Curiosity and the Exploration of Mars,” will take place at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at the Ardmore Convention Center. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

As the chief engineer for the Solar System Exploration Directorate at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lee is responsible for the engineering integrity of robotic planetary missions, including Curiosity.

“Curiosity is a technological miracle,” said Mary Kate Wilson, Noble Foundation director of granting and chair of the Profiles and Perspectives Committee. “Lee’s presentation will detail the rover’s mission from both scientific and engineering points of view, and place Curiosity in the context of the overall human exploration of Mars.”

Sponsored by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, the Profiles and Perspectives Community Enrichment Series began in 1998 as a way to benefit the area community through presentations by interesting and unique speakers. This season has included presentations by the late J. Rufus Fears, Ph.D.; award-winning writer and documentary filmmaker Dayton Duncan; and self-taught Plains historian and professional photographer Wyman Meinzer.

“It has been a tremendous season already, and I’m certain Mr. Lee will be a spectacular finale,” Wilson said. “We will announce our next season this fall. We have some intriguing prospects that are sure to wow the audiences.”
