Fort Washita Benefit

Residents are gathering together to save Fort Washita.

A Nov. 13 fundraiser for historic Fort Washita, located northwest of Durant, promises fun for the entire family. The event will run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the fort, and admission is free.

Registration for a poker run begins at 9 a.m., with the first bike out at 10:30 a.m. and the last bike in at 3 p.m. The registration fee for the run is $15 per bike, first hand, and $5 for additional hands.

A car show will be held, with registration starting at 9 a.m., and judging results announced at 3 p.m. Prizes will also be given during the "Loudest Motorcycle Contest" at 3 p.m.

Quilting supplies, gift cards, home furnishings, floral arrangements, boat winterizations, handmade crafts, gift baskets and more will be up for grabs during a day-long silent auction. At 4 p.m., a live auction will begin and feature fishing trips, an airplane ride, and many other desirable items.

Raffles and a bake sale will offer attendees a variety of handmade, homemade items and many other things.

On display will be antique tractors by the Bryan County Antique Tractor Club, fire trucks from the West Bryan County Volunteer Fire Department, and police cars from several police departments. There will also be a "Best Lights/Best Graphics Contest" for police vehicles. Also on display will be helicopters.

Other activities will include a military re-enactment by the 19th Texas Volunteer Infantry, Indian pow-wow and a wild west gun fight. Children's activities will include a bounce house, coloring booth, craft booth, clowns, face painting, balloon animals, sack race and more. The Bryan County Sheriff's Department will have lots of goodies for youngsters, and the Durant Police Department will be there with fingerprint and DNA testing kits.

A concession stand will be available, and tee-shirts will be available for purchase.

Proceeds from the event will go into a fund to help rebuild the fort's flagship structure, a 30-foot by 100-foot, two-story barracks, which was recently destroyed by fire.
