(Gunter, Texas — July 19, 2013) Gunter Independent School District is hosting a baseball-themed event at Tiger Field Friday, July 26, benefiting two high school students injured this spring.
Registration for the Home Run Derby begins at 6 p.m. with competitors vying to see who can hit the most home runs at 6:30 p.m. The competition is open to all ages, with participants divided into age groups and prizes awarded for the most home runs or furthest hit balls. Cost is $10 for five balls.
After the derby, Gunter High School baseball and softball players will face off in a friendly competition at 7:30 p.m. Game tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Children under age 3 will be admitted free. Various community groups and individuals will sell food during the event, with all proceeds benefiting the Gillespie and Robledo families.
This is the first of several fundraisers the district has held to help the families of junior Brittnee Gillespie and senior Monce Robledo, both who are recovering from injuries sustained in an ATV accident. Faculty and staff members donated $600 to the families and the high school softball team sponsored a benefit car wash that raised more than $1,700. In addition, Chick-fil-A in Sherman hosted a spirit day, “Dining for Darlings,” and donated 10 percent of sales during the event to the two families.
