(Idabel, Okla.) – For anyone interested in learning more about building preservation, Idabel Main Street will host “Historic Building Maintenance,” a workshop on the care and maintenance of the historic district, June 25th, from 5:30pm – 7:00pm, at the Idabel Public Library.

Guest speaker will be Oklahoma Main Street Architect, Larry Lucas. Lucas will discuss common 'delayed maintenance' issues and 'inappropriate materials' concerns found across the Oklahoma Main Street network. Participants will receive guidance on utilizing the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, as well as developing a regular maintenance calendar that could be used for virtually any building.

"We hope to give the people attending a real sense of the historic treasures around them, and to help them develop the best plan for caring for them," said Lucas.

Faye House, program manager of Idabel Main Street, said that the workshop is needed across the area and has extended invitations to neighboring towns in Oklahoma as well as to towns across the border in Arkansas and Texas.

“This workshop really came about because we were just heartbroken over the damage to the Rouleau Hotel, which is on the National Register for Historic Places,” said House. “Many of the towns in this area were settled and built around the same time and many of them have the same situation – older buildings that need help. We believe the more education we can get out about how best to preserve our old buildings, we all win.”

The cost of the workshop is free and open to the public. Interested individuals may call the Idabel Main Street office at (580) 208-2000 for more information and to RSVP.
