SHERMAN, TX - A school in Sherman turned 115 years old Saturday and its alumni, as well as the rest of the community, came together to celebrate.

"It's been a real experience coming back, I almost forgotten this part of my life," said Roy May, one of the hundreds of people who attended Jefferson Elementary's 115th anniversary Saturday morning. He went to Jefferson back in the 1950s and he said he saw some of his classmates at the event.

"I've seen two of them here. I'm glad they have name tags on because I wouldn't have recognized them. Time passes and we all change a little bit," he said.

The ceremony started up with the Sherman police department's honor guard presenting the colors and Sherman Mayor Bill Magers presenting proclamations from the city and the state of Texas.
Jefferson principal Amy Porter said she was honored the school received much recognition.

"This just paves the way for more greatness. This is an exemplary school and we want to continue to stay that way, and the families and the relationships that we've got here. Once you're part of Jefferson, you're always a part of Jefferson," she said.

Former teachers and students, along with other visitors, toured the building revisiting their old classrooms.

LaVerne Kilgore used to teach at Jefferson back in the 1950s.
"I just thought it was wonderful, I think it still is," she said.

Kilgore said she was so happy to see some of her students.

"They've grown up! They've changed, but anyway it's been really nice," she said.

May's mother was a teacher at Jefferson at the time he attended the school and his father was the principal. He said it's because of them he decided to come home.

"I think I mainly came up, not so much because I came to school here, but because I thought I owe it to my mom and my dad to come up because they spent so much of their lives and invested so much in this school."

I have great memories of Jefferson School. Attended 4-6 grades in early 50's. I had great dedicated teachers- Miss. Williams, Mrs. Caraway and Mrs. Buckley.

I think this was a very well planned and needed recognition, I myself attended Jefferson and all 5 of my children attended as well! This is no doubt a wonderful school and i would not trade the time I spent there for any thing.
