ARDMORE, TX -- Local Ardmore native and artist Jimmie Dodson, Jr. received top honors at the 2013 Red River Art Show & Sale, a fundraiser hosted by the Good Shepherd Community Clinic, Inc. He won the grand prize for Best of Show for his art piece, “Nothing’s Perfect,” a welded steel wall hanging sculpture. Inspiration behind the piece is a depiction of equal symmetry between both good versus bad and positive versus negative in all things. The hand-cut crack in the piece represents the fact that although “nothing’s perfect,” there can still be an inherent beauty.

Jimmie has spent the last 10 years pursuing his dream as a sculptor. He describes his work as old world meets new world with a modernistic approach. His unique pieces are made by incorporating simple, geometric shapes and found objects; both natural and manmade. His choice in materials to incorporate into his pieces range from various mixed metals including many forms of mild steel, stainless steel, bronze, copper and titanium to fossils and special stones. He begins the process by sketching out an architectural design followed by finding the best materials to represent his vision for the piece. His techniques for assembling and finishing the sculptures depend upon the materials involved but mostly involve mig and tig welding, brazing and silver-soldering then applying a patina and urethane sealer. His sculptures range in size from table top to monumental and include wall hangings and freestanding pieces.

Jimmie’s work has won several awards including the 2008 and 2011 Best of Show at the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Canada; the 2010 Best in Sculpture at the La Quinta Fine Arts Festival in Palm Springs, California; the 2009 Best in Sculpture at Art City Austin in Austin, Texas; and the 2010 People’s Choice Award at the Whitefish Art Festival in Whitefish, Montana.

His artwork is on display in private collections as well as public displays and galleries. He has pieces displayed all over the world, from Ardmore to Holland, Canada and Qatar. His work can be viewed locally at the Ardmore Convention Center, the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce and at the Wit’s End in downtown Ardmore. Jimmie will also be showing his art pieces at Fiesta Oklahoma downtown Ardmore, Saturday, September 21st and at the Charles B. Goddard Center from October through November.
