SHERMAN, TX---Meals on wheels of Texoma is now asking for help to fund meals for seniors during the holiday season.
"She comes and she just knocks on the door and says, "Mrs.Brown I'm coming in," she comes in, and we visit for a little while." said Brown.
That is the happiest part of the day for 86 year old Jennie Brown who anticipates her visit from a meals on wheels volunteer.
"I look forward to them, I watch the clock, when it comes I usually open the door and make sure I hear them and I've got a little bell out there and one of them likes to ring that bell." said Brown.
Brown has been living on her own for four years since her husband passed away.
"The meal that we provide them is really a substitute or proxy for a real family." said Pittman.
Meals on wheels of Texoma Director Greg Pittman says although many of their clients need the food they deliver, the friendship that's formed is also important.
"I had one of our clients actually tell me once that if they had to choose between the meal that we deliver and the companionship they get from our volunteers, they would choose the companionship, that that's the most important thing to them."
Pittman says the demand for meals is high because of the increase in the aging population. One out of every three meals is paid through local donations but with Thanksgiving here, they're asking for help to keep it going into the holiday.
"When you go around the Thanksgiving table, and you think about what you have to give thanks for, I promise you that one of the first things they give thanks for is our volunteer." said Pittman.
"I think it's wonderful and I think the people that can help should help, because we really depend on them, and we really need it." said Brown.
