PARIS, TX – Five North Lamar High School students advanced to the State UIL Academic meet after competing at the UIL Region II meet on Saturday, April 20 hosted by Texas A&M University Commerce. Advancing are Jesse Angel, Ethan Carter, Cody Eilrich, Kelsey Preston, and Ryan Conner. The scholars will travel to the University of Texas in Austin on May 20-22 to compete.
Going into the region, North Lamar High School captured the District 13 AAA UIL Academic championship with 482 points. Trailing were Atlanta with 396 points, Paris with 178 points, Pleasant Grove with 172 points, Pittsburg with 142 points, and Liberty Eylau with 65 points.
Individuals and teams who placed at the region meet were: Ryan Conner – 1st in Informative Speaking, Kelsey Preston – 3rd in Informative Speaking, Jesse Angel – 2nd in Literary Criticism, Ethan Carter – 3rd in Literary Criticism, Cody Eilrich – 4th in Prose Interpretation and 3rd in Persuasive Speaking, Seth Gurley - 7th in Persuasive Speaking, Maddi Jolley - 4th in Poetry, Bridget Moore – 5th in Social Studies, and Ryan Pescaia – 5th in Writing. North Lamar’s Speech Team placed 1st overall and the Literary Criticism Team placed 2nd.
North Lamar UIL Academic Regional Competitors
North Lamar’s UIL Academic season began January 31 at the CX Debate Tournament in Pittsburg. The team of Cody Eilrich and Kelsey Preston placed first with Ryan Conner and Seth Gurley taking second place. Eilrich was named Top Speaker for the tournament.
On March 19, the Computer Science and Speech and Debate tournament was held in Mt. Pleasant. Both the Speech and Computer teams placed first in the competition. Individual champions were Cody Eilrich in Persuasive Speaking, Kelsey Preston in Informative Speaking, Maddi Jolley in Poetry Interpretation, and Craig Hale in Computer Science.
North Lamar UIL Academic District Competitors
The District 13 AAA UIL Spring Academic Meet was held March 22 in Mt. Pleasant with individuals placing in the top three places and first place teams advancing to the Region UIL Academic Meet. Those individuals to advance were Jered Chenevey (Current Events), Joy Merritt (Computer Applications), Ryan Pescaia (Ready Writing), Ethan Carter (Literacy Criticism champion), Jesse Angel (Literary Criticism), Carson Rast (Science champion), Jessica Roberts (Science), and Bridget Moore (Social Studies). Other members of the Literary Criticism team, Lindy Norris and Nhi Son, along with other Science team members, Sam Erickson, Alison Chao, and Matthew Gonzalez, also went on to compete at region.
North Lamar’s One Act Play advanced to Area after competing at district on March 28 at Texarkana College. District standouts in the production of Tartuffe were Reiley Preston (Best Actress), Keaton Raney (All Star Cast), Spencer Sansom (All Star Cast), and Bailey Eilrich (Honorable Mention All Star Cast). Recognized at Area on April 9 in Longview, but not advancing, were Bailey Eilrich (Best Actress), Keaton Raney (All Star Cast), Spencer Sansom (All Star Cast), and Haley Hines (All Star Cast), and Chase Ramsey (Honorable Mention All Star Cast).
