10:00 AM-10:30 AM: COMMUNITY DIALOGUE:SUPPORTING VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT
Sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes and sexual assault survivors will wait weeks, months, even years to disclose their assault. And if they finally disclose the assault, they often disclose to close friends, family, or clergy. This 30 minute presentation and dialogue between SALSA’s professional advocate and community members will cover issue spotting, community response and support for victims of sexual violence.
10:30 AM-12:00 PM: CIVIL LEGAL REMEDIES FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS
One out of five women and one out of twenty men are sexually assaulted in Texas. Yet the high rates of victimization are not reflected in statistics for many reasons. Regardless of whether a criminal prosecution is pursued, a sexual violence survivor may have many outstanding legal needs that a criminal court cannot adequately address. This workshop will identify the variety of areas where sexual assault survivors may seek assistance including; privacy, safety, finances, housing, employment, education, citizenship status or crime victims’ rights. Continuing education units will be available for attorneys (CLE), law enforcement (TCOLE, formerly TCLEOSE), LPCs and social workers.
