The Sherman Public Library is very excited about our upcoming Summer Reading Club for children and teens. Children ages birth-11 can Dig into Reading and join the Youth Summer Reading Club. The theme for the Teen Summer Reading Club this year is Beneath the Surface and it is open to teens ages 12-18. Youth participants track the titles or the time that they spend reading or being read to and teens track time to win free books and other fun prizes. Registration begins on June 6 and the last day to turn in a completed Reading Log will be August 10.
Studies show that the number of books read during the summer is consistently related to academic gains. Children who participate in Summer Reading Programs maintain reading skills over the summer and are better prepared to return to school in the fall.
The Sherman Library is also offering a variety of free summer programs. At the Reading Club Kickoff on Thursday, June 6 from 5:00-6:00 p.m., kids can sign up for the Reading Club, dig for real fossils and paint a pet rock! The Monday Madness programs will be held on Mondays at 2:00 p.m. at the Municipal Ballroom June 10-July 29. The performers this summer include The Critterman, Dan Gibson, StoryTime Theater, Baba Kwasi, Dallas Puppet Theater, magician Bryan Lankford and Jungle Jim. The Crafternoon Kids programs will be held on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. June 11-July 30 and are open to children ages 5-10. Space is limited and children can call to register 1 week in advance for each program. The Crafternoon Kids will be creating a variety of projects including race cars, sidewalk chalk and more! We will also offer a Crafternoon Teens program on Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. June 13-August 1. This program is open to teens ages 11-18. Space is limited and teens can register 1 week in advance for each program. The teens will be making duct tape wallets, origami and more! Children and teens going into the 3rd-12th grades can play the Summer Reading Club Game Board, answer research questions and win Book Bucks! Participants can also earn Book Bucks by writing Book Reviews. Kids can spend their Book Bucks on cool prizes at Awards Day on Saturday, August 17 from 1:00–3:00 p.m. Reading Club participants can choose up to 5 free books on Awards Day and the Summer Reading Club Grand Prize drawing will be held that day as well. The Grand Prize this summer is a Kindle Paperwhite! Read to Win StoryTimes for children ages 18 months-5 years will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. June 11-August 1. Teens ages 12-18 can join the Teen Volunteer Program. Teen Volunteers help sign kids up for the Reading Clubs, assist with the Crafternoon Kids programs, and read and play educational games with students going into the 1st-3rd grades in the Reading Buddies program on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00-4:00 p.m.
